Everett School Committee (Monday June 1, 2026)

At the Everett School Committee meeting on Monday, June 1, 2026, Julie Ann Whitson, Health and Wellness Coordinator, presented the district’s wellness policy review and revision process. She opened by saying, “Good evening. Thanks for having me,” and explained that federal law requires districts participating in the school meal program to conduct a triennial assessment of the wellness policy. “And we did that this year,” she said, adding that the assessment was one of the district’s biggest goals and that the district is then required to make revisions accordingly.

Whitson said she worked with Athletic Director Miss Turner to review both the strength of the wellness policy and how well it is implemented. She reported that the assessment was “overwhelmingly positive” and that the existing policy was already “pretty strong.” Still, she said revisions were needed to more clearly codify practices the district was already doing and to add language on monitoring and accountability. She noted that some current practices were not specifically included in the written policy and that the update was meant to bring the document into alignment with day-to-day practice.

During discussion, committee members returned to the recurring issue of lunch time and seat time. Whitson responded to concerns about the 20-minute lunch period, acknowledging that the topic comes up “every single year” at the wellness committee. She said, “We’re doing the best we can right now,” and praised the cafeteria operation, stating that Whitsons “does an excellent job keeping the line moving” and that staff do a good job getting students to their seats so they can eat.

She also addressed food and nutrition programming, clarifying that farm-to-table offerings already exist through work with local growers, while other food system education items remain “future goals.” She agreed positively with discussion of gardens and taste testing and said she looked forward to returning next year to report on progress.

No votes involving Whitson were recorded in the extracted meeting activity. She concluded by thanking the committee before being excused.
